Introduction to the study of sexual identities, communities and politics as they relate to gender, race and class in different cultural contexts. Special attention is given to social justice perspectives. Course is interdisciplinary in its approach, using literature, history, arts, and social science.

In this course, students trace the emergence of LGBTQ+ music and dance culture in the United States, using theories and methods from queer studies, ethnomusicology, and history to map how identity evolves, and the interactions between identity and cultural change.

In this course, students will draw from critical scholarship and community memory practices, discussions, and community-focused assignments to develop an understanding of community-focused archives and museums as knowledge domains. Students will be introduced to the concept of "research with respect" to develop practical strategies for working within community-focused archives and museum contexts to: identify records, artifacts, and their creation; document their activities; collect, manage, display, make accessible, and preserve records and other historical and cultural material.
