"I remember birth. The process of unfolding with another body. Before speaking, I dreamed of attending birth. It was the same dream for years. This dream was one of few constants in my life.

In my early childhood, undulating grief overcame me. It wasn’t long before we were taken, like so many other children of single mothers, into a home where children were sold.

In the Catholic orphanage, little atrocities became part of the daily bread. I escaped by drawing to families that might want to buy me. I drew my visions for a happy home with white skin, a big house, and open sky with flowers reaching up to the sun.

Today, I do not have white skin, a big house or flowers reaching up to the sky. I have decades of gestational darkness giving birth to my tenderness. This is my first show of me catching the shadows."
