The Renaissance: Queer and Trans Life and Contributions in Visual and Popular Culture

Last year, 2023, the LGBTQ+ Institute hosted its first Queer and Trans Futures Conference with the theme “Beyond Hope and Towards Possibility and Imagination” which brought together more than 15 junior scholars, artists and organizers. We were honored to have Monica Jones and Mo La Flo as keynote speakers and guest artist from the community.
This year, we are re-convening with the theme “Renaissance: Queer and Trans Life and Contributions in Visual and Popular Culture” set to happen April 9th 2024.
From Beyonce’s album “Renaissance” (the queer and trans folks who made the show as glamorous as it is) to the series “Pose” and “Euphoria” to the iconic and undeniable impact of Big Freedia and Queen Latifah on the music industry to Janelle Monae’s “Age of Pleasure” and Eric Effiong’s fashion trends and infectious laugh in the series “Sex Education”, Queer and Trans people continue to shape and influence visual trends and certainly popular culture. This year’s conference theme is inspired by the multiple ways Queer and Trans folks, particularly Black Queer and Trans people, have impacted the visual and popular culture scene, illustrating this a form of knowledge production as well as documenting queer and trans existence and experiences.
We invite students (undergraduate and graduate), community members, organizers, artists and faculty whose work, research, teaching and overall interests engage, highlight and/or critique Queer and Trans experiences, lives, scholarship and representations in visual and popular culture (for example film, music (sound and videos), photography, paintings, fashion aesthetics and social media among others) to submit abstracts which can be in the form of panels, presentations, workshops or performances for the conference.
