Queer and Transgender People Of Color

The Institute for LGBT Studies & the Office of LGBTQ Affairs support Professor Francisco J. Galarte and the QTPOC Lecture & Workshop Series

Since becoming a Faculty Fellow at the LGBTQ Resource Center in 2013, Professor Francisco J. Galarte has been getting acquainted with the needs and interests of LGBTQ students across the University of Arizona campus. As a faculty member in the department of Gender and Women’s studies and as a member of Faculty Advisory Committee, FAC, for the Institute for LGBT Studies, Professor Galarte consistently interacts with LGBTQ students of color on who have expressed an inability to feel intelligible on campus, in student life, and in the classroom. Given his consistent accessibility and regular student interactions as a Faculty Fellow, a group of LGBTQ students of color approached Professor Galarte to ask for support in programmatic and intellectual interests in and beyond the classroom.  In an effort to provide a venue for this marginalized and underserved community and their allies, Professor Galarte designed and developed the “Queer and Trans* People of Color, QTPOC Speaker Series.”  The QTPOC Speaker Series, supported by the LGBTQ Resource Center (with link: http://lgbtq.arizona.edu/qtpoc-speaker-series, the Common Ground Alliance (with link http://commonground.arizona.edu/) and the Institute for LGBT Studies, hosts up-and-coming artists, activists, and scholar-creators focused on QTPOC cultural productions. The QTPOC Speaker Series features public lectures and film screenings as well as workshops and performances for UA students and for the Tucson community more broadly.  This innovative student-centered project highlights and contributes to the Institute for LGBT Studies' commitment to critical and creative scholarship, community engagement, rigorous cross-disciplinary intellectual exchange, and pedagogical innovation as well as inclusive excellence.
